The event is organised by The Friends of Honeywood Museum and local charity EcoLocal with lots of local community support. Please help spread the word about this exciting and atmospheric family event.

The 2014 event will use the same layout as last year to allow for more space between stalls and more twinkly lights. We’d like to thank Naturally Thinking for being this year’s Gold Sponsor.

We are looking for a few more volunteers to help with the event on the day. If you would like to help, please contact Tansy on

The event start will be signalled by the ringing of All Saint’s Church bells (feel free to pop into their coffee afternoon 2.30 – 6pm on your way to or from the Frost Fair).

We’ll have choirs, a brass band, clog & morris dancing, live folk and popular music and entertainment of various types with a seasonal feel. We’ll have a bar and hot drinks.

Inside Honeywood Museum look for traditional story telling with puppets, Punch and Judy shows and a Father Christmas’ Grotto in the magic of the refurbished ‘childhood room’ surrounded by toys from a bygone era.

The Friends of the Ecology Centre are running their Christmas Fair and Winter Wonderland Trail alongside the Frost Fair. This will include hand-crafted gifts, teas, coffees and homemade cake. The Winter Wonderland Trail offers the chance to explore the delights of the award winning Ecology Centre.

A Profile of Woodcote Green Garden Centre

20140504-095358.jpgContinuous improvements and a committment to quality have seen Woodcote Green Garden Centre in Wallington, Surrey, claim its place high among the Garden Retail Top 100, Matthew Appleby reports.

Woodcote Green Garden Centre: aims to provide good value, exceptional-quality products and high level of customer service

Woodcote Green Garden Centre is located on a 12 acre site 20km south of London. In 1959, Lawrence Newton planted the first crops on his newly acquired land at Woodmansterne Lane and Woodcote Green opened its doors for the first time. The centre grows its own shrubs and also edible crops for its farm shop and cafes. It aims “to provide good value and exceptional-quality products across a broad range coupled with high levels of customer service”.

Woodcote undergoes continuous improvements, with the latest changes including “Reduce, Recycle & Compost” initiatives in which all packaging and crockery at the Waterfall Cafe is now compostable. There is a new natural play area for preschoolers, the indoor and outdoor aquatics departments have combined and there is a lot more home-grown produce being nurtured in Woodcote’s nursery for use in the farm shop and restaurants.

Drunken thieves Cameron Wylie and Russell Stowell, who stole phones, a wallet, a car and some trousers from an escort and her companions, are jailed

A robber who asked an escort and two friends she was entertaining to strip before stealing their phones, a car and even a pair of trousers has been jailed.

Cameron Wylie, 28, and accomplice Russell Stowell, 34, burst into the Wallington flat and demanded money in a raid at 8.30pm on Friday, October 25.

The drunken pair, both from Wallington, subjected the woman and her male and female companions to “a nasty ordeal” before leaving in the man’s car with his wallet, trousers and six mobile phones, a court heard.

The duo were caught early the next morning after the stolen car was spotted in Brixton.

They were found guilty after a two-week trial at Croydon Crown Court last Friday. Wylie, of Rectory Lane, was found guilty of two counts of robbery and was sentenced to five-and-a-half years in jail.

McDonalds not to appeal decision over Wallington restaurant

Just to let you know that I have just spoken to Cllr Jayne McCoy and she has been informed by the Sutton planning office that McDonalds won’t be appealing against the decision to turn down their application for the Stafford Road site, which is fantastic news for everyone in the area. However we’re not opening the champagne and putting out the bunting just yet as they still have until mid-April to appeal – and as someone once said “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over”!

On behalf of the rest of the committee, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their help over the past few months. Without you signing our petition, posting flyers, putting up window posters, etc. I don’t think we would have won. Right at the start of the campaign, Cllr McCoy said that “people power” could stop this happening and she’s been proved right; it looks like we won’t now have to chain ourselves to bulldozers to stop this happening!

Thanks once again for everything; I’ll keep you posted if I hear any more news about the site.

Breaking News on St Helier

st helierI wanted you to be the first to know that the planned public consultation into the proposals to close the A&E, maternity and children’s hospital at St Helier will not go ahead.

This follows the decision by Surrey GPs to pull out of the Better Services Better Value review and just days after I teamed up with Paul Burstow and Sutton Council to organise a ballot of GPs in Sutton.

This is good news for the future of St Helier Continue reading

Sutton MPs ballot doctors on St Helier

tom-brakeTom Brake and Paul Burstow are contacting all Sutton’s GPs to encourage them to take part in a secret ballot on proposals to downgrade St Helier Hospital.
Sutton’s Liberal Democrat MPs are asking the GPs whether they favour plans to remove A&E and maternity services from St Helier or whether they support a separate process run by Sutton’s Clinical Commissioning Group to decide the future of the hospital.
The move follows months of campaigning by the two MPs, patients and residents opposed to the ‘Better Services, Better Value’ plans.
Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, commented:
“It is unfair to ask staff and patients to continue coping with this uncertainty. The interests of patients must come first and the £219m investment in our local hospital delivered.
“We encourage people in Sutton to ask their GP what they think about plans to close the Accident and Emergency and send patients to Tooting, Kingston or Croydon instead.”
“If we can show that local GPs do not back these proposals, our hand against BSBV will be even stronger.”
Sutton and Cheam MP Paul Burstow said:
“Recently, Sutton’s GPs voted to send the proposals to downgrade St Helier out to public consultation. Better Services, Better Value have taken this as endorsement for their views when this is not necessarily the case.
“Many of the doctors I have spoken to agree with me that these plans are outrageous, but we also want people to have their input.”
“It is only right that the doctors who will have to deal with the fallout from these plans have their say, especially as the plans presume a level of provision in the community which simply doesn’t exist. Our secret ballot, counted by the Council, will make sure that they can do so in confidence.”

ASDA Wallington puts best food forward to beat cancer

Asda Superstore, Beddington (David Anstiss) / CC BY-SA 2.0

Staff from Asda Wallington will be putting their best foot forward as part of a giant fundraising drive for breast cancer awareness and are calling on the community to Walk On with them.

The Wallington store will be hosting and taking part in a sponsored 5k walk at Beddington Park on Sunday 15th September at 10am as part of Asda’s Tickled Pink campaign.

Asda launched the Tickled Pink campaign back in 1996 to raise money to help improve the lives of people with breast cancer both now and in the future. It supports two charities; Breast Cancer Campaign and Breast Cancer Care. Breast Cancer Care provides expert information and professional support for people with breast cancer and their families; and Breast Cancer Campaign helps fund research into fighting the disease.

In a bid to raise as much as possible for the cause, every store in Asda’s south division (152 stores) will be hosting its own sponsored walk with the aim of raising £5,000 each. If every store reaches its target then Asda Wallington will have contributed to £1million being raised for charity in one day.

Sponsorship forms can be collected and donations can be made at Asda Wallington. Certificates will also be presented to any children, or pets, that take part in the walk.

Lisa Hunt, Community Life champion at Asda Wallington is encouraging customers and the wider community to dust off their walking boots and come together to support the fight against cancer.

Lisa, said: “Asda has a long and proud history of supporting breast cancer awareness, helping to raise more than £25m in 17 years.

“We hope the people of Wallington can get fully behind the activity as we all know someone or a family that has been affected by cancer. So much can be achieved when a community comes together to support each other so we hope we can reach our fundraising target.”

McDonald’s plans to open in Wallington

McDonaldsResidents have raised concerns after plans were submitted for a McDonald’s drive-through in Wallington.

The plans include a two-storey restaurant, a drive-through, external seating and 44 car parking spaces in Stafford Road – on a site which used to hold a car-wash and backs on to a residential area.

Sutton Arena has been officially renamed the David Weir Leisure centre following a record breaking summer for the athlete.

The father of two added four gold medals at London 2012 to the two he won in Beijing four years earlier, but said he was “absolutely delighted” by the decision to rename his local sports centre after him.

He said: “I am absolutely delighted. It is a very great honour. I have trained there and taken part in a few events there and it’s an excellent facility.”
